Aoraki/Mount Cook, often just Mount Cook, is part of the New Zealand Alps and
the highest mountains in New Zealand.
Mount Cook National Park (also known as Aoraki National Park)
is alpine in the truest sense of the word - with breathtaking high mountain peaks,
glaciers and permanent snow fields under one of the most impressive starry skies in the world.
Although the national park includes a total of 23 mountain peaks over 3,000 metres high,
it is well connected.
State Highway 80 leads to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village on the picturesque
Lake Pukaki - a convenient base for fans of alpine sports.
Far from the lights of the cities, the region offers fantastic opportunities for stargazing.
Aoraki Mount Cook National Park makes up most of New Zealand's only international sky reserve,
the International Dark Sky Reserve.
